York is one of my favourite places to photograph

When Jamie & Cailum first reached out to me and told me that their wedding was going to be an intimate ceremony in York, followed by a cosy pub reception at the Eagle & Child in the middle of Autumn, it was like music to my ears! York is one of my favourite places of all time and it's a dream to photograph.

York provides some of the most stunning backdrops you could wish for on a wedding day - every turn you make, it's like straight out of a romance novel.

Jamie & Cailum let me know how important it was for their wedding photos to feel relaxed and how much they valued a documentary-led approach, as they didn't want to feel awkward on camera. Again, the more we spoke, the more I got excited to capture their day.

Preparations started at No. 1 York, by GuestHouse

Jamie got ready with her mum, grandma and best friend at No.1 York, by GuestHouse - it was calm, the sun was shining through the huge gorgeous windows in the suite - a big relief to all of us, as rain had been forecast. Music played while everyone quietly enjoyed getting ready.

I photographed Jamie's gorgeous bouquet by Owl House Flowers - a dreamy autumnal colour palette that complimented the colour palette of the city, foliage and details that Jamie and Cailum had chosen to tie their day together. I always enjoy photographing the details when I first arrive, so I can chat with everyone before starting to photograph them, I feel like this breaks the ice nicely!

As the morning progressed, the excitement grew as Jamie got into her dress - she did a first look with her dad, brother and grandparents. I felt so lucky to capture these beautiful moments!

Bubbles were shared and tears were shed, and before long it was time to walk to the registry office.

Walking to York Registry Office

Because both Jamie and Cailum got ready nearby to York Registry Office, they each walked to the ceremony with their families - I really loved photographing this part of the day. The October sunshine and autumn leaves made it such a beautiful journey to capture.

There was no stress, no rushing, just a short walk with their closest people - I'd say this is a pretty perfect way to calm the nerves before the ceremony!

I walked with Cailum and his family first, capturing photos of them documentary style, before keeping an eye out for Jamie making her way down the street with her dad and brother, so I could also capture their journey too. I feel like these photos really add to the final gallery.

York Registry Office Ceremony

Jamie & Cailum's ceremony at York Registry Office was filled with love from everyone in the room - the emotions all came to the surface during Jamie's bridal entrance with her dad.

Throughout the ceremony, Jamie and Cailum couldn't contain their joy, with so many laughs and smiles shared between them and their guests, it was truly wonderful to witness behind the camera.

As with all ceremonies, I captured everything as it unfolded, completely documentary style. I remain discreet while capturing those all important moments!

Capturing the emotions in the room that you might miss

I spotted the mother of the bride having a quiet and emotional moment during the signing of the registry - I discreetly captured this, as moments like this are fleeting and easily missed by the couple while so much is going on around them, but precious to look back on.

Family coming together to support each other

During the signing of the registry, a violinist played a beautiful rendition of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' - a sentimental song to Cailum's grandmother - it was heartwarming to see their family offer comfort and support while taking in all of the emotion.

Candid wedding portraits around the streets of York

Once we'd dusted off as much confetti as possible, we headed out for a short wedding portrait session around the streets of York. I had already planned some spots with Jamie & Cailum before the big day, so we knew exactly where we wanted to go.

We started with a short stroll through the York Museum Gardens, followed by a walk up to the Minster and then back through the narrow side streets to the Eagle and Child Pub.

We kept the session relaxed and it was a chance for the newlyweds to debrief on their day so far and celebrate their marriage together before heading back to the buzz of their reception with their guests!

The autumn foliage made for an even more stunning York backdrop than usual, it was an absolute dream!

A cosy York pub reception at Eagle & Child

The Eagle & Child pub made for the perfect place for the newlyweds and their guests to celebrate together - it was super cosy, with fairy lights, candles and bunting decorating the upstairs rooms.

Jamie & Cailum added personal touches, such as a display of past generations family wedding photos, personalised beer mats and a polaroid picture display for their guests to add their photos to as keepsakes.

Cailum delivered a heartfelt speech, handwritten with his father's own handwritten wedding speech in his pocket as inspiration - this was a lovely and sentimental touch.

The cherry on top was everyone taking part in a quiz together!

Like the ceremony, I took a completely documentary style approach to photographing the reception. The Eagle & Child offered so much character - I loved photographing through the crooked doorways and windows. Given it was built in 1640, there's not that many straight lines!
